Build a target list that spans levels: a few reaches, several realistic, and a few safeties. Coaches at every division recruit athletes who show genuine interest in their specific program.
D1 programs that opted into the House settlement fund a roster capped at 25; D2 has 7.2 scholarship equivalencies; NCAA D3 offers no athletic aid at all but often meets need with academic and institutional grants; NAIA and JUCO carry their own limits. A D3 or NAIA offer frequently nets out cheaper than a partial D1 scholarship — compare total cost of attendance, never headline scholarship value.
D1 coaches cannot initiate recruiting contact until September 1 of your junior year. D3, NAIA and JUCO coaches face far looser restrictions and can often reply to you right away. If you are early in the process, the non-D1 programs on your list are where a reply is most likely — and that conversation is real recruiting, not a consolation prize.
