D1 Softball Colleges

There are 309 NCAA Division I softball programs, competing across 31 conferences in 48 states — about 20% of the 1,552 college softball programs in CommitBound's directory. The highest level of college softball — the most resources, the earliest recruiting, and the most competitive roster spots. Since 2025-26, settlement schools can offer athletic aid across a roster capped at 25 players.

NCAA Division I softball is most concentrated in California (22), New York (22) and Texas (21) — together 21% of the level. If you are building a target list, start with the states you can realistically be seen in, then widen.
